Abstract

Nanomaterials often deliver impressive laboratory metrics, yet translation is weakened when the path from synthesis to operating-state behavior is poorly documented. This review asked whether performance claims could be traced consistently from controllable processing to verified structure, mechanism, function, and a stated translation boundary. Peer-reviewed literature published mainly from 2021 to 31 March 2026 was examined through a narrative review. During major revision, a structured OpenAlex and Crossref audit was added for operando and active-state characterization. The literature showed that size alone rarely determined performance. Surface chemistry, defects, interfaces, and process history often changed the outcome, and in many systems the functional state differed from the pristine or post-mortem structure. Translation problems were most visible when these changes were not connected to realistic measures of loading, yield, stability, or manufacturing compatibility. Stronger studies combined controlled processing with complementary characterization and measurements made under relevant operating conditions. They also made clear where the evidence stopped. Comparison across application areas showed markedly different levels of readiness, from manufacturing-scale evidence in a few device platforms to predominantly laboratory demonstrations in others. On this basis, the review treats the evidence chain as a practical traceability tool rather than a new materials theory and translates it into a domain-adaptable minimum evidence package for engineering claims.
